The soroban is an abacus developed in Japan. It is derived from the ancient Chinese suanpan, imported to Japan in the 14th century. Like the suanpan, the soroban is still used today, despite the proliferation of practical and affordable pocket electronic calculators.

About

When I wasn't in business meetings during my Japan trip I was in markets shopping for antiques and inspiration. Here is something I brought back with me.

Far out of the CBD is an old hardware store, filled to the brim with antiques. We have been visiting this secret location for many years so it was super exciting to finally go back. There were curated piles of baskets, ceramics, old apothecary bottles and restored furniture – we wish we could have brought everything home. The husband and wife owners were happy to see us again and walked us through the residential streets to their other storage warehouse. We had free range to go through boxes and cabinets to find some amazing pieces.
