Story
"Day to go to the forest" is a workshop in Odai-cho, a forestry town in the mountains of Mie. With the backing of Toyota Motor Corporation, which owns a vast forest in the town, it started as a collaborative project with woodworking artist Kazuto Yoshikawa. The purpose of the "Forest Day" initiative is to start a business using the trees in the forest, revitalize the region, hold workshops at schools and workshops and get familiar with nature.
Yoshikawa’s mirror are inspired by the curves of river stones and was designed by taking advantage of the characteristics of Japanese cypress, which is suitable for bending. Prototypes and designs are all made by Yoshikawa at the studio of "Day to the Forest", while production is done by Mie Frame, a local frame maker who specializes in careful processing and finishing.
Yoshikawa had recently moved his studio to Tokyo, and we were lucky enough to catch a train out to visit and see where the mirrors are created.
