Story

At the end of our recent trip to Japan, we spent a few days forest bathing in Iya Valley and taking in the magnificent views surrounding us. On our way back to Osaka, we visited this lovely kiln that specialises in Otani pottery.

Otani pottery first originated in a quiet spot at the foothills of the mountains in the west of Naruto City in 1780. The kiln has a long history of changing hands and master-craftsmen along the way. Since then, through the passing of time, Otani pottery has developed and improved to what it is today. The kiln now creates objects of fine art and functional daily utensils that are widely admired for their simplicity and beauty.

Japan

The Iya Valley region in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan is a scenic area known for it's dramatic mountain valleys, thatched roof farmhouses and historic Vine Bridges. As this region is quite isolated it has developed it's own unique style and heritage, still keeping some traditions alive that have been lost elsewhere in Japan.
