Introducing Provider Studio

A New Chapter Shaped By Travel, Design, Scent And The Places We Never Forget.

Provider Studio began the way most good things do. Slowly, and out of love. For years, we’ve been thinking about what makes a place memorable. Not necessarily the biggest or most impressive places, but the small hotels, quiet restaurants, neighbourhood bars and beautifully considered stores that stay with you long after you’ve left.

Often, it isn’t one particular thing you remember. It’s how everything worked together. The light in the room, the scent when you walked through the door, the objects you used, the music playing in the background, the menu you kept as a souvenir. All those seemingly small details create a feeling, and that feeling becomes the memory.

Provider Studio grew from our shared obsession with these places.

Where It Started

For Tara, the story really began with a trip to Japan in 2013.

It was there that she fell in love with the deep respect for craftsmanship found throughout Japan. The patience behind making something properly, the importance placed on everyday objects and the stories carried by things made by hand. That trip eventually led to Provider Store.

Over the following decade, Provider became a way to share those discoveries with others. We built relationships with artisans across Japan and Australia, sourced objects with stories behind them, designed our own products and hand-poured candles in our Sydney studio.

Along the way, Provider became about much more than simply selling things for the home. It became about creating a feeling around them.

Dan’s path came through design.

After starting his first design studio at 21, he has spent close to two decades building brands for founder-led businesses across hospitality, fashion, retail and technology. His work has always centred around visual storytelling and finding the idea that makes a business feel distinctly its own.

Travel has played a pretty big role in both of our lives. We’re the people who plan holidays around where we want to stay, eat and wander.

We’ll happily cross a city for a tiny restaurant, choose a hotel because of its typography or spend far too long in a beautifully designed convenience store.

Then Came Provider House

Provider House became something of a testing ground for many of the ideas we had been thinking about.

When we created the house in Hobart, we didn’t just think about what it should look like. We thought about what it should sound like, smell like and, most importantly, feel like. Every detail became part of the whole experience.

We worked with Japanese fragrance maker @aroma to create a custom essential oil inspired by the Australian bushland surrounding the house and the warmth of traditional Japanese woods. Our hand wash was designed to recall the scent of a Japanese bathhouse. While ceramics, towels, candles and objects from Provider Store filled the rooms.

Individually, they were small decisions. Together, they created an atmosphere.

Then something interesting started happening.Guests wanted to take that feeling home. They would stay at the house, use the hand wash, burn the candles, wrap themselves in the towels and drink from the ceramics. Afterwards, they would find those same pieces at Provider Store and purchase them for their own homes to recreate that feeling.

Hospitality and retail had started to blur together. The stay became a way to experience a product before owning it, while the product became a way to revisit the memory of a place long after leaving.

That idea became a big part of what Provider Studio is today.

Creating Places People Remember

Provider Studio brings together our experience across branding, retail, product design, scent and hospitality. We work with design-led hotels, guesthouses and hospitality spaces to create brands with a strong sense of place.

For us, branding isn’t simply a logo, font or colour palette. A guest begins experiencing a hotel long before they arrive. It starts when they first discover it online, see an image, read a few words or hear about it from a friend. Then they arrive.

The website becomes the front door. The photography becomes the room. The tone of voice becomes the welcome note. The scent, amenities, menus, objects and little rituals throughout the stay all become part of the same story.

The best hospitality brands carry that feeling through every one of those moments.

The Things You Can't See

Scent has become an especially important part of how we think about hospitality. It’s invisible, but incredibly powerful. A particular fragrance can immediately return you to a hotel room in Tokyo, a summer somewhere in Europe or a place you haven’t thought about in years.

When we develop a signature scent, we start with the place itself rather than fragrance trends. It might come from the landscape surrounding a property, the history of the building or something personal to the people behind it.

For Paramount House Hotel in Surry Hills, that meant creating a candle inspired by the playful character of the hotel's iconic pink elevator and the subtle fragrance already experienced throughout the property.

For Akitsu Ryokan in Shiga, Japan, we created a room spray that brought together Australian wattle and fresh tatami, reflecting founder Nikita’s own story of creating a place between Australia and Japan.

The goal isn’t for someone to walk into a room and immediately think about the fragrance. It should simply feel like it belongs there. Then, months later, they smell it again and are transported straight back.

A New Chapter

Looking back, Provider Studio doesn’t really feel like something completely new. It feels more like a coming together of everything we’ve been doing for years. Provider Store taught us about objects, makers and the rituals of everyday life.

Provider House taught us how those objects, scents and details could shape the experience of a place. Years of travelling taught us what makes us want to return somewhere, and nearly two decades of design experience taught us how to turn those feelings into a brand.

Provider Studio brings those worlds together. At the heart of it is a very simple idea: the places we remember most are the ones that make us feel something.

And usually, it’s the smallest details that make all the difference.
