Nara has long been one of our favourite places to visit in Japan, so discovering this original 1927 map felt particularly special. Rich in history and beautifully aged, it offers a rare glimpse into the city nearly a century ago.

About Nara
There is a quietness to Nara that is unlike anywhere else in Japan. Ancient temples sit beneath towering cedar trees, deer wander freely through the parks and centuries of history feel woven into everyday life. As Japan's first permanent capital, Nara has long been a place where tradition and craftsmanship have flourished. This original 1927 map offers a glimpse into the city nearly a century ago, preserving its streets and surrounds as they once were while celebrating the timeless character that continues to draw us back.
Story:
There are a handful of places in Japan that we find ourselves returning to whenever we can, and Nara is one of them. It has a slower pace than many of Japan's larger cities, inviting you to wander without an agenda, discover hidden streets and spend time appreciating the small details. When we found this original 1927 map, it immediately reminded us of those afternoons spent exploring and quietly taking it all in.
The softened paper, delicate typography and gentle signs of age make this more than just a map, they tell the story of a place that has evolved over the past century. Carefully brought back to Australia and professionally framed in Sydney in a solid Tasmanian Oak frame, it is now ready to begin a new chapter as a one-of-a-kind piece for the home.
