About Ōshima Island
Just 100 kilometres south of Tokyo, Ōshima feels like a world away. Shaped by the ever-present Mount Mihara, the island is known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, rugged coastline and brilliant displays of camellias each spring. It has long been a place people escape to in search of slower days and fresh sea air. This original 1928 map captures the island nearly a century ago, preserving a glimpse of its landscape before generations of change.

Among the city maps and old prints we discovered during our travels through Japan, this one immediately stood apart. Rather than documenting busy streets or growing neighbourhoods, it tells the story of an island shaped by nature. The sweeping coastline, mountainous landscape and quiet sense of place were impossible to walk past.
We carefully brought this original 1928 map back to Australia and had it professionally framed in Sydney in a solid Tasmanian Oak frame. Full of beautiful detail and the gentle patina that only comes with age, it has become one of our favourite pieces in the collection. At the heart of Izu Oshima is the 758 meter tall Mount Mihara, an active volcano which is the source of several interesting sites and various hot springs on the island. Beaches at the island's northern and western coasts are the venue for snorkeling, sunbathing and other beach activities during summer. Oshima is also known for its camellia flowers, which can be spotted almost everywhere from around January through March.
