Nakano City is known as a hub for everything anime, manga and subculture-related, thanks to places such as the Nakano Broadway shopping mall. Produced in 1941, this map preserves Nakano just before Tokyo underwent enormous change during the twentieth century, making it both a beautiful artwork and a remarkable historical document.

*As much as we try, colours may vary slightly from what is photographed and paper may show signs of age due to its antique nature.

About Nakano

Just west of central Tokyo, Nakano is a neighbourhood that blends old Tokyo with the city's creative spirit. Quiet residential streets sit alongside independent cafés, tiny bars and small family businesses, while Nakano Broadway has become legendary for its vintage collectibles, manga and design culture. It's a place we've always enjoyed wandering around in, never quite knowing what we'll discover next (our favourite thing to do in Japan). This 1941 street map captures Nakano at a very different moment in its history, preserving the neighbourhood long before the Tokyo we know today took shape.

Story:

Some maps immediately draw you in, and this was one of them. Rather than capturing landmarks alone, it reveals the everyday fabric of Tokyo, the streets, laneways and neighbourhoods that make a city feel alive. We love imagining the lives that unfolded along these streets more than eighty years ago.

Found during one of our trips through Japan, this original 1941 Nakano Ward map stood out for its remarkable level of detail and beautifully aged paper. After carefully bringing it back to Australia, we had it professionally framed in Sydney in a solid Tasmanian Oak frame so it could be enjoyed for many years to come.
