In the countryside of Gifu, there's a small family-run workshop, the owner is a master potter by the name of Ryoji Hayashi. Now in his mid 80's, Hayashi still hand makes and paints every single piece. This special Mt. Fuji candle vessel was handcrafted in Gifu by Ryoji Hayashi and comes in a handcrafted wooden box, personally stamped with a certificate of clay. We then fill each one in our Surry Hills studio with pure soy wax. These cups took over six months to craft, a rare and limited collaboration we are super proud of.

Story

In the countryside of Gifu there's a small family run workshop, the owner is a master potter by the name of Ryoji Hayashi. Now in his mid 80's, Hayashi still hand makes and paints every single piece. His two sons now run the workshop for him, so he can focus solely on his craft. Due to his age and busy production schedule, Hayashi san does not take on new custom work or work with new clients. However, with many visits (and begging) to his workshop, Hayashi obliged (yay for us!).

Last year we got to visit the workshop and see our special handmade Mt. Fuji cups being made by the master himself. It was an honour to see such an infamous craftsman working on special pieces just for us!

Specialising in Shino ceramics of the Mino tradition, Hayashi was awarded the Honourable Mention at the Gifu Prefectural Exhibition and received the Governor’s Prize. He has also received awards at the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, New Craft Exhibition, Japan Fine Arts Exhibition, the Gifu Marumono Exhibition and the Brothers Exhibition (just to name a few).

Each cup was handmade in Gifu by Ryoji Hayashi and comes in a hand crafted wooden box, personally stamped + a certificate of clay. We then fill each one in our Surry Hills studio with pure soy wax.

These cups took over six months to craft, a rare and limited collaboration we are super proud of.
