About Nippon Kodo:

The Nippon Kodo range combines traditional Japanese techniques honed over 400 years with modern perfumery to create a range of beautifully crafted incense. Formulas and skills were inherited from the ancient texts by Juemon Takai, who was the purveyor to the emperor during the Tensho era.

It takes a long time to become a full-fledged incense craftsman; it is a skill developed over time with a lot of patience and practice. To become a master, you need an understanding of how climate, air conditions, and slight differences in the atmosphere can affect the product. With each batch of incense made, the water must be adjusted precisely to make sure the consistency is correct in order to knead the incense.

The freshly kneaded soft incense is then dried, cut, and formed, a process that takes great skill, as the delicate incense can become dry, brittle, and easily broken in the process if not made correctly. This premium incense is a testament to time-honored traditions and the skill involved in crafting each stick.

The history of incense is deeply rooted in Japan; it is a tradition stemming from Buddhism, a practice that was introduced in the 6th century. Fragrances were burnt to entrust people's wishes and prayers, a tradition you will still see throughout Japan.
