Made of a thick rush that adapted to the harsh environment of Okinawa over many years. Compared to mainland rushes, it is about 2 to 3 times thicker and about twice as heavy, making it stronger and longer-lasting. The lining on the underside is made of a non-woven fabric with a non-slip finish to prevent the flooring from getting scratched.

Story

After our recent excursion to Japan where we stayed in a ryokan in Nara, we have been inspired to bring that feeling back home. If ryokan are defined by one thing its tatami mats. Weaved out of dried rush straw these mats are firm but also surprisingly soft underfoot. Great for lounging areas where there isn’t much more furniture then a table and chairs (or a bedroom if you like the idea of sleeping on a futon) as they subtly tie together small living spaces and provide a faint but sweet aroma of dried straw.
