This trip we found so many beautiful works of art, from small vintage woodblock artworks to drawings and of course a few vintage maps as well. This limited edition print is by artist Kihei Sasajima and is part of a very limited run. Kihei Sasajima is a Mashiko-born printmaker. He studied under Shiko Munakata (1903-1975), a printmaker representative of modern Japanese art. Sasajima dedicated his life to black-and-white prints created in “Takuzuri”, his own technique of relief printing.

About The Artist

Kihei Sasajima was a celebrated Japanese printmaker and an influential figure in the Sosaku Hanga (creative print) movement. Born in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, Sasajima developed a passion for art from an early age, eventually studying under renowned woodblock artist Shiko Munakata.

Known for his striking monochromatic compositions, expressive brush-like lines and innovative woodblock printing techniques, Sasajima's work beautifully balances traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern artistic expression. His prints often explore rural landscapes, spiritual subjects and the subtle beauty of texture and form.

Drawing inspiration from Japanese calligraphy, Sasajima developed a distinctive artistic style that emphasised simplicity, contrast and craftsmanship. Today, his work remains admired for its timeless character and important contribution to modern Japanese printmaking.

Story

Although we promised ourselves a couple of years ago that our buying trips would never again coincide with a Japanese summer, alas, it worked out that way because we have an exciting collaboration at the end of the year we needed to be in Sydney for.

We attempted to wake up early and reach the antique markets before the heat and humidity set in, although our long hours spent there meant it was impossible to avoid. Heat and sunburn aside, we found so many stunning ceramics, baskets, animals, and some truly unique one-off pieces.
