About the artist
Waichi Hayashi is a contemporary Japanese artist celebrated for his beautifully detailed woodblock prints, vibrant use of colour and thoughtful interpretations of the natural world. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, Hayashi graduated from Kanazawa Art and Crafts College in 1974, where he studied traditional Japanese art.
Working primarily in woodblock printmaking and ceramics, Hayashi has developed a distinctive style that combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with a fresh, contemporary perspective. His artworks often capture the quiet beauty of everyday life, from delicate flowers and changing seasons to peaceful landscapes and scenes inspired by nature.
Characterised by rich colours, intricate details and a beautiful sense of light and depth, Hayashi's prints reflect a deep appreciation for Japan's natural surroundings. His carefully considered compositions bring a sense of warmth, tranquillity and timeless charm to his work.
Although less widely known outside Japan, Hayashi remains a respected artist whose work offers a beautiful connection between traditional Japanese printmaking and modern artistic expression.
Story
Although we promised ourselves a couple of years ago that our buying trips would never again coincide with a Japanese summer, alas, it worked out that way because we have an exciting collaboration at the end of the year we needed to be in Sydney for.
We attempted to wake up early and reach the antique markets before the heat and humidity set in, although our long hours spent there meant it was impossible to avoid. Heat and sunburn aside, we found so many stunning ceramics, baskets, animals, and some truly unique one-off pieces.
