Story

After our recent excursion to Japan where we stayed in a ryokan in Nara, we have been inspired to bring that feeling back home. If ryokan are defined by one thing its tatami mats. Weaved out of dried rush straw these mats are firm but also surprisingly soft underfoot. Great for lounging areas where there isn’t much more furniture then a table and chairs (or a bedroom if you like the idea of sleeping on a futon) as they subtly tie together small living spaces and provide a faint but sweet aroma of dried straw.

Fukuoka, capital of Fukuoka Prefecture, is known for ancient temples, beaches and modern shopping malls, including Canal City. Maizuru Park contains ruins of 17th-century Fukuoka Castle. The central Hakata district contains Tōchō-ji Temple, home to a 10m wooden Buddha and the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, with displays on daily life in the Meiji and Taishō eras.
